About JOINING OUR Senior CHOIR
If you would like to join our Senior Choir or to attend an Open Rehearsal, please register your interest by filling in the form at the bottom of this page. This page should answer most of your questions - if not, please contact Clare Wain who is in charge of recruitment at joinachoir@fyc.org.uk.
for the Senior Choir (school years 8-13) we welcome new members by audition in June, September and January. Boys, treble voices only, can audition if they are currently in years 6 and above. Please register your interest by filling in the form below or by emailing joinachoir@fyc.org.uk.
For the Senior Choir, potential members should attend an Open Rehearsal, which will be followed by an informal audition with our Musical Director. The audition will involve singing scales, much like the oral section of a practical instrumental exam. You do not need to prepare a piece.
Rehearsals are every Wednesday at The United Reformed Church in Farnham, between 5.15pm and 7pm. Our Training Choir rehearse at a similar time, currently at the Farnham Maltings, and our Junior Choir are also at the United Reform Church. Car parking is available opposite the venue in South Street car park.
The Senior Choir typically perform about 4-5 times per year, both in Farnham and further afield in the South East of England. They also go on tour, usually in the summer, both in the UK and abroad, often to competitions. Please see tours.
Subscriptions for the Senior Choir are £230 per term, this includes the cost of the training weekend in the Autumn Term. There is also a new joiners’ fee, currently £95, which covers some elements of informal uniform, music and new members’ additional rehearsals.
FYC has a Bursary Fund to assist with the fees for families with low incomes or who are on benefits. Please find more information and an application form here.
Singers only wear a uniform for concerts, not rehearsals. The Senior Choir maintains an extremely high standard of presentation, as befits the high standard of music that they produce. Parents/carers should provide a smart, black outfit, that is kept only for performance, with black socks and black shoes. More information will be give to new parents, once the children join.
About Auditions
You will attend an Open Rehearsal, which gives you and your child a chance to see what being in FYC is all about. There will normally be the opportunity to chat to other parents during the rehearsal. We aim to make the audition process friendly and helpful, and hopefully an enjoyable experience! We want to find out about your current ability but are also looking for potential and readiness to learn.
What happens if I’m accepted?
If you gain a place in the Senior Choir you will be expected to attend rehearsals every Wednesday at The United Reformed Church, South Street, Farnham, GU9 7RN from 5.15pm – 7pm. There are also monthly rehearsals on Sunday afternoons. Dates for these are communicated at the beginning of the year. Once accepted to the Senior Choir, it is anticipated that singers will attend all rehearsals and performances.
