Farnham Youth Choir and its supporting choirs have an incredible range of talent supporting their development, led by Joanna Tomlinson.
FYC MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Jo studied as a postgraduate singer at the Royal College of Music, before training as a conductor. In 2010 she founded Constanza Chorus, a London-based, auditioned chorus of 140 members, whom she has conducted at the Cadogan Hall and with orchestras including the London Mozart Players. Joanna has worked with London Symphony Chorus, Royal College of Music Chorus, Manchester Chamber Choir, Joyful Company of Singers, Reading University Choirs, Trinity College of Music Junior Department Choirs and many other choral societies. As a singer she performs as an oratorio and recital soloist as well as with choirs such as BBC Singers and Gabrieli Consort. Away from the music room Joanna also enjoys yoga and fine wine, but not at the same time...
Matthew Rickard read Music at the University of Surrey where he studied the piano with Clive Williamson. During this time Matthew developed his interest in chamber music and ensemble playing and was a prizewinner in the annual chamber music competition at the University. Matthew pursued his postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Michael Dussek and Graeme Humphrey, specialising in piano accompaniment. Matthew currently enjoys a busy career as a chamber musician, soloist and recording artist. His other interests include photography, walking, motor racing, eating out and travel.
CONDUCTOR OF FYC GIRLS CHOIR
Jo McNally is a music educator from the USA who has been living in the UK since 1980 working as an animateur, conductor and singer. As a conductor, she specialises in young and developing choirs. She has been on the team delivering ABCD conducting courses since their inception and is now teaching The Art of Choral Direction for the Sherborne Summer Music School. She has also been Guest Conductor for the AMIS Asia Middle School Girls Honour Choir in Shekou, China. Her published works include Young Voiceworks (OUP) and Junior Choral Club (Music Sales). Away from the ‘office’, Jo lives in High Wycombe with her husband Chris and their cats Bonkers and Squeek. She also loves needlework, baking and the never-ending challenge of remodelling their ‘house on the hill’.
CONDUCTOR OF FYC BOYS CHOIR
Patrick Barrett joined the FYC music team in September 2015 and already the Boys’ Choir has expanded under his leadership. He was educated in Ireland, reading music education at Trinity College, Dublin and the National Conservatory of Ireland. His post-graduate training was at Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary and the Royal Welsh College of Music where he completed an MMus in choral conducting. Currently, he is a musicianship tutor with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and assistant conductor with the National Children’s Choir. He is also working with Brockham Choral Society and across London in the Ark Schools in the delivery of their choral music programme. Patrick also loves a game of hockey at the weekend!
CONDUCTOR OF FYC TRAINING CHOIR
Sarah Burston is a freelance professional musician based in Surrey. Her portfolio of work includes directing and training choirs; teaching individual singing and instrumental lessons; accompanying choirs and examination candidates; and writing and running singing, general musicianship and score-reading workshops. She studied for her music degree at Royal Holloway, University of London, and during her time there she sang in numerous choirs. Since graduating, she has continued to sing with some fine choirs and has now moved into choral direction. In addition to being the conductor of the Farnham Youth Training Choir, Sarah is an Associate Choral Conductor of the Royal College of Music Junior Department, and is the Musical Director of the Marygate Singers and Assistant Musical Director of Leatherhead Choral Society. Sarah also works regularly with Wimbledon Choral Society. Sarah is a singing teacher at Edgeborough (Frensham) and St George’s Junior School (Weybridge). In her free time, Sarah enjoys ballet and tap dancing.
