Farnham Youth Choir is a registered charity and is governed by a volunteer BOARD OF TRUSTEES
DAVID WHELTON OBE, Hon RCM, Hon FRAM
– FYC PRESIDENT
David joined FYC as Honorary President in October 2017. A Farnham resident, he was Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the Philharmonia Orchestra between 1987-2016 and among his many appointments in the arts world he remains a director of the Three Choirs Festival and patron of Performers Together. In 2015 he was awarded the OBE for services to music. David’s energetic commitment and experience in harnessing new technologies will be invaluable as FYC seeks to reach out to a broader audience base.
He says: “FYC’s musicianship and technical achievement is legendary, as is the infectious enthusiasm they bring to every performance. The contribution FYC makes to British musical life is indispensable and they are the finest possible ambassadors for our vibrant choral tradition as they perform across the world”
ANDREAS KLATT - FYC VICE-PRESIDENT
For more than 20 years Andreas has been closely associated with Farnham Youth Choir, both as a parent with three children in the choirs and in various support roles. Most notably, he has been able to secure and donate significant commissions from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (twice), Augusta Read Thomas, Jonathan Dove and James MacMillan which have done much to further raise the choir’s profile.
LIZ CHAPMAN - FYC OPERATIONS MANAGER
Liz joined FYC as Operations Manager in 2017. She also works for the professional chamber choir, Sonoro and has previous experience both in the theatre and television industries. Liz has always sung in choirs herself and hopes her two daughters will join the Training Choir when they are old enough.
Board of Trustees
GRAHAM NOAKES - FYC CHAIRMAN
Graham has been FYC Chairman since 2008. Now retired, he spent 20 years as a writer/consultant with a Farnham-based PR consultancy following an earlier career in sales & marketing in the food and print industries. He is married to Alison, who was FYC secretary for 13 years: they have three boys who were members of FYC between 1988-2003, two of whom remain actively involved in the Alumni organisation. A keen concert-goer, Graham is also involved in a number of other local charitable organisations.
ANDY BLAIR - FYC DEPUTY CHAIRMAN
Having graduated with a degree in music from the University of Surrey, Andy is currently an Executive Board member at the University for the Creative Arts as Director of Marketing, Student Recruitment & Engagement. Having spent 15 years with Holy Trinity Church Choir in Guildford, Andy is an orchestral percussionist, singer and performer of both classical and popular music. Andy has been involved in FYC since 2016, developing the brand, strategic direction and website for the choirs. Andy is also a Fellow of the RSA. Andy is married to Fiona, also music graduate and Director at University of Reading.
JOHN NICHOLLS - FYC TREASURER
John is the FYC Treasurer. He is an independent management consultant specialising in coaching and supporting public sector organisations. With a life-long passion for choral singing, John was a member of the Philharmonia Chorus for over 20 years, an organisation for which he served as treasurer, company director and charity trustee. Married to Alison, also a keen amateur musician, their two children have between them been members of all five FYC choirs.
HELEN COLE - PARENT LIAISON
Helen’s daughter has been a member of Farnham Youth Choir since 2013. Previously a solicitor, Helen is now an independent academic who lectures and publishes on British literary history. She likes to sing but performances are strictly limited to the family bathroom.
JASON HARRIS - MARKETING & SPONSORSHIP
Jason is a current choir parent with his two daughters both involved in FYC choirs. Jason is the Chief Executive of Global Casualty at XL Catlin, a global Insurance and Reinsurance Company. He is responsible for all elements of his operation including strategy, sales and governance. Jason is keen to apply his professional experience to the benefit of FYC. Jason enjoys sailing when he has spare time.
SUE MILLER – COMPLIANCE & SOCIAL MEDIA
Sue is a current parent and has been supporting the choirs since 2012 when her daughter joined the Girl’s Choir. Her background is mainly in Environmental Health and Educational Childcare so her FYC role utilises her experience in Safeguarding, Childcare, Food Hygiene and Paediatric First Aid. Sue feels the choir is going from strength to strength and is keen to encourage parents to get involved and play a key role in the evolution of the choirs.
KEVIN SYLVESTER - MARKETING & SPONSORSHIP
Kevin is a FYC Alumni parent with daughters Laura and Rochelle who perform with FYC Alumni Choir. Kevin has been FYC Sponsorship/Fund Raising Co-ordinator since joining FYC Management Committee (2009). Kevin’s wife, Jayne, a long time FYC volunteer parent since 2006, is a professional singer teaching voice at local schools.
