Boys aloud!

The ONLY BOYS ALOUD! event, sponsored by Farnham Youth Choir with funds from Surrey Arts, was designed as a Starter day to attract boys to the joys of singing.

Ninety schools had been invited by letter and flyers to help promote the Boys Only event. Some forty boys attended, not all of whom belonged to a choir in their own school. All aged between 8 and 12, the boys came from both Private and State Funded schools in Surrey and Hampshire.

They were led by three experienced choral leaders: David Victor-Smith, Brian Cotterill and Suzzie Vango.

The event certainly stimulated young minds. The boys were kept on their toes as the three presenters frequently changed the moods and complexity of the material to help sustain the boys’ concentration.

Concentration was certainly needed in some of the team games that were also part of the day. The boys ‘got physical’ with chairs and footballs as a foil to some more sedentary activities.

The material chosen by the leader introduced the young trebles to singing games, foreign language songs, spirituals and a beautiful Scottish folk song with a soaring descant.

As parents and friends piled into the hall for the 20 minute resume at the end of the afternoon there were many amazed expressions as the boys ran through their varied repertoire.

“I don’t know how they managed to remember all that!” was a familiar comment.
