Alumni
A group of alumni spanning many generations of FYC members came together at Frensham Heights School on 3rd July for a day of singing with David Victor-Smith. Suzzie Vango, present vocal coach to FYC, took the warm-ups then joined the singers for the morning and in the afternoon gave singing lessons to the girls in small groups. The men, as ever in the minority, were only there for the morning but they each received some attentive vocal coaching from specialist Edwin Rolles. The full choir enjoyed working on a demanding arrangement by Jonathan Rathbone of Swing low sweet chariot and Morten Lauridsen's wonderfully evocative setting of Sure on this shining light. In the afternoon the upper voices worked on arrangements by Gwyn Arch before finishing with a trip down memory lane to sing through past FYC favourites such as Will ye go lassie, Carrickfergus and Goin' up a yonder.
The next alumni choir day is on Saturday, 4th September 2010. Contact 01252-717173, leaving name and number for more details.

Keeping it in the family

A thirty-strong alumni choir took to the stage at the Maltings in June, enjoying a 'trip down memory lane' when they performed two pieces at the Annual FYC Summer Concert.  A beautiful rendition of the Swedish folk song 'Vem kan segla' in an arrangement by Robert Sund was followed by the old King's Singers classic 'Dayton Ohio' in a four-part arrangement, interestingly, by the grandfather of two of the singers, none other than the father-in-law of FYC's Chairman, Graham Noakes.

Another successful Alumni Singing Day on 27th March reunited some 40 enthusiastic singers, with the youngest just 15 years old, but spanning vintages of the choir right back to the beginning! FYC Voice Coach Catherine Watts attended in the morning to give expert singing tuition in small groups for those who wanted to brush up on their choral skills.

The music rehearsed included items by Scarlatti, Victoria and Vaughan Williams, interspersed with folk songs and lighter items.

Reasons enough for some to finish the day at a local hostelry...
